It’s amazing and equally heartwarming how a simple bowl of warm porridge can make a profound difference in the lives of thousands of South African children.
South Africa (13 March 2025) – A bowl of warm porridge may seem like a simple breakfast to many, but it’s a meal that easily reminds me of my childhood and how my grandmother would wake up early to cook and prepare it for us as her many grandchildren while visiting over the school holidays. Dishing it out in separate bowls for each of us, each scoop served with love, and every filling spoonful like a warm hug from within!
That’s just my personal fond memory of soft porridge mornings. For thousands of more children across the country, this nutritious breakfast is generously provided daily at their schools through the Lunchbox Fund.
The Lunchbox Fund is a non-profit organisation that responds to the education crisis faced by millions of children in South Africa by offering targeted nutrition in school and pre-school settings to encourage enrolment and improve attendance and learning.
For Mirriam Shilaluke, Principal at Masha and the Bear Pre-School, the porridge at her school is a powerful tool in supporting her students.
“It boosts the children’s immune systems and closes the gap in nutrition they may lack at home. Thanks to the Lunchbox Fund, our learners are healthier, stronger, and better prepared to thrive each day,” she shared.
A passionate teacher at Pholosong Daycare, Annah Votjeka, shared that the children’s absolute favourite porridge flavour was chocolate, offering something nice to look forward to in the mornings before heading to class.
“Watching them enjoy it is always a beautiful moment for me. I am proud to see the children thriving and staying healthy, thanks to the nutritious porridge from the Lunchbox Fund, they love so much,” Votjeka said.
Porridge is a simple yet significant meal for children in need. It not only fills empty stomachs but also provides the energy these learners need to stay active and engaged throughout the day and ensures they are well taken care of day after day.
