Buckle up and grab your popcorn, Ster-Kinekor is bringing back the nostalgia of drive-ins!
Cape Town, South Africa (21 November 2020) – Getting out of the house to enjoy dinner and a movie has been no simple task since coronavirus spread throughout South Africa, but Ster-Kinekor has found an innovative solution to the problem – and are bringing back the nostalgia of drive-ins.
Outdoor cinema venues have been popping up all over the country in recent weeks, but none are able to offer the latest released movies… until now!
The first Ster-Kinekor drive-in experience, in partnership with V&A Waterfront, will kick off on Friday, 27th November at 19:00 with the screening of the new release Jiu Jitsu.
“We’ve got some of the greatest movies that’ll be lighting up the night sky – and daytime too, coz that’s how we roll – at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The drive-in cinema will consist of a state-of-the-art LED outdoor movie screen, which will allow us the best picture resolution for the day and night screenings; simply use your car radio to tune into the FM radio frequency and voila, you’re set to go!”
The ticket price will be a flat rate of R250 per car for new releases and R220 per car for older films limited to private passenger vehicles only and one passenger per seat. An addition of just R100 will include your snacks of popcorn and sodas delivered in sealed bags for health and safety purposes.

Your snacks can be pre-purchased online with your ticket and will be ready for collection at the venue.
The first screening takes place from Friday 27th November at 19:00; additional screenings are scheduled on Saturdays at 15:00 and 19:00, Sundays at 14:00 and 18:00 as well as Thursdays and Fridays at 19:00 throughout the festive season.
And they have movies for everyone – kids and family films include Scoob, The Incredibles, Toy Story and the new release 100% Wolf.
For others who like some action, they’ve got Avengers: Infinity War and Jiu Jitsu starring Nicolas Cage and Frank Grillo – a new action Sci-Fi movie about an ancient order of expert jiujitsu fighters who face vicious alien invaders in a battle for Earth every six years. The V&A Waterfront Drive-In is Ster-Kinekor’s launch project as they look for more sites around the country to bring this outdoor entertainment to more South Africans!
