Moved by a teen’s battle against Lupus, Scott Arendse organised a magical marathon that raised much-needed funds to support her brave fight.

Cape Town, South Africa (08 May 2025) – After learning about a teenager diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Scott Arendse took it upon himself to launch a 21km half marathon from Simonstown to Diep River to raise funds and awareness for 18-year-old Mercédi.

We shared about Scott’s heartfelt Miles For Mercédi cause back in March, and fast forward to a little over a week ago, the initiative was well supported by a dedicated running crew who pushed through scorching conditions to keep a young girl’s hope alive.

“The Miles For Mercédi event was nothing short of magical. I’m still buzzing from all the love, laughter, and incredible support we experienced throughout the day,” says Scott.

Thanks to all who attended, supported and contributed towards the cause, an incredible R22,000 was raised towards Mercédi’s healthcare!

Mercédi’s courage, smile, and unwavering spirit lit up the day, inspiring everyone involved.

“It was an absolute privilege to share those moments with her and everyone who came out to support. Yes—it was hot, it was hard, and it tested us. But we did it,” Scott joyfully adds.

And the best part? It’s not too late to make a difference. You can still contribute towards Mercédi’s fight against Lupus by donating to her BackaBuddy page here.
