Enjoy a classic movie, happy vibes, and knit a square towards a good cause!

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 September 2025) – Crafters will enjoy this. Joburg’s top independent cinema, The Bioscope, has been hosting knitting events! We know it’s an unusual combo, but it’s actually pretty cool.

The first of many kicked off in June last year, when the cinema launched a dedicated screening where they left the lights on, so knitters and crocheters could do what they do best and enjoy a good movie.

Now, it’s a regular ‘thing’ where crafters get together and share creative energy and practice multitasking in motion. Plus, there’s a good cause behind it all. Cinema-goers are welcome to work on their own projects, or they can take part in the Bioscope’s blanket drive for the Baby Box Project.

The drive collects knitting squares that are assembled into blankets for mothers in underprivileged parts of Johannesburg.

“We love supporting the Baby Box Project by gathering squares made during the film that can be made into blankets for young underprivileged mothers,” shares The Bioscope.

It’s really such a wholesome event, and there’s an entire community behind it.

Just a few weeks ago, a group of ‘craftivists’ came together to wrap trees and trellises outside of the cinema in colourful yarn graffiti, to celebrate the start of Spring. Tree-huggers were encouraged to come by and share the love. Afterwards, the wraps were disassembled and donated towards the drive as blankets.

Plus, the movies are all classics. The Knit-In events have already covered fan favourites like Notting Hill, Mamma Mia, Dirty Dancing, Legally Blonde, Bridget Jones and She’s All That. They’ve even screened local gems like Die Kwiksilwers.

It works just as any usual movie booking would. Crafters can book tickets online (seats are limited), and screenings are updated on a monthly basis. Once those are locked in, you just need to show up for the event at 44 Stanley Ave, in Braamfontein Werf, with crafting goodies in tow. Before the movie, The Bioscope will share further info and instructions about the blanket drive and how to get involved.

The next screening is in October, during Halloween, with Practical Magic on the menu!
