The results are in, South Africa has spoken, and this social media platform is South Africa’s favourite by far!

South Africa (02 July 2024) — South African social media users are something of a unique force to be reckoned with when it comes to life on the internet. No matter the social media platform, we’re known across the world for making any comment section that much more interesting, for our fierce protection of each other and of course, for our love of laughing online.

But which social media platform do South Africans favour the most? And where are we spending most of our time online as a nation? Which platforms have been dethroned from South Africa’s favour, and which are rising to the occasion?

The Social Media Landscape Report 2024 did a deep dive to answer these questions. Using data collected via thousands of interviews from social media users across over 8,000 communities, the sampling helped researchers understand which social media platform reigns supreme in South Africa out of the big five (Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok and LinkedIn) and the results will surprise many a Gen Z.

Facebook is still South Africa’s favourite place to be online according to the numbers (59.6%). Not only this, but Meta’s champion platform has even seen an increase in usage from South Africans.

However, the same can’t be said for X (Twitter), which took quite the nose dive in user base decline from 2022 to 2023, dropping to 18.8%. Considering South African Twitter was once the place to be online, the end of an era slowly seems to be setting course.

TikTok on the other hand has gone up in local numbers at 34.0%, while Instagram faced a little drop to 26.9%, as did LinkedIn with a usage of 12.2%.

So, there we have it folks—Facebook and TikTok are the most South African-approved online spaces. But, let’s not forget that there’s a very real world outside our screens, and laughter is best when it can be heard in real life!
