Three Northern Johannesburg residential estates are going head to head this Mandela Day to fill as many “Jars of Hope” as possible.
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 May 2022) – The north of Johannesburg is home to many residential estates and three of the oldest and largest are going head to head for a good cause. Cedar Lakes, Dainfern and Fourways Gardens are hoping to fill thousands of jars with delicious soup ingredients that will feed thousands more throughout the winter.
The idea is that each estate needs to fill as many jars as possible with the winner earning the first-ever “Estate of Hope” cup. The cup will be up for grabs each year thereafter and so some friendly neighbourhood competition.
The jars are based on the “Jar of Hope” concept. A Jar of Hope is made up of different soup ingredients that can be poured into a pot with water and a few stock cubes. The meal is then cooked and can feed four or more people.
Each jar contains one cup of rice, one cup of lentils, one cup of soup mix, one sealed stock cube and one packet of soup.
This year, three charities are going to be the beneficiaries of the jars. With a total of 3000 jars to be made, that means 12,000 filled stomachs this winter!
Doorway to Dignity, one of the organisations set to benefit from this challenge, hopes it will inspire other estates to get involved in meaningful community upliftment projects for Mandela Day.
“And please follow their lead. It doesn’t have to be as big of an event, but if your community (school, church, neighbourhood…) is looking for a Mandela Day ideas – this is a fantastic one!
It can be a drive for jars of hope, hot beverage packs, blankets, winter clothing, toiletries and menstrual pads… Get creative and let’s make this Mandela Day worthy of the man who’s name it holds!” – Doorway to Dignity
