Goodbye ‘that didn’t come out the right way’ text messages! WhatsApp has announced a new editing feature that’ll allow texters to make changes to messages already sent. Here’s all you need to know:
Global (25 May, 2023)— It’s the end of an era for text messages that didn’t come out the right way, already-sent spelling mishaps and all the other unsung headaches that resulted from never being able to edit a text once sent had been hit (or accidentally brushed). Now, the social media service WhatsApp has responded to the plight of its users; announcing an exciting addition to its features!
Taking to its official blog, WhatsApp announced the news that over-thinkers and grammar gremlins have long waited for — we can now edit our sent messages!
“From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats,” WhatsApp shared.
How Will WhatsApp’s Edit Feature Work?
If you’ve sent a text but need to make a few changes, you can now hold down on the message to display options (long-hold) as you would if you wanted to unsend it.
There you’ll see a few options including the edit feature, where you’ll get 15 minutes to make any changes you need to make. After the time lapses, your message will either have undergone a makeover or will remain the same, with the gap for edits closed.
And, the new feature will also let the person receiving your message know it’s been edited (the same way Instagram lets users know when a caption has been changed) but it won’t show the edit history. After all, you’re texting your co-worker, not applying to an English Literature course where your writing progress needs to be on display.
While some parts of the world have already gotten cosy with the new rollout, exact dates haven’t yet been shared. However, WhatsApp did note that it will be available to everyone in the weeks to come!
