When Mduduzi Gwabin found himself stranded without enough money to pay for a tollgate, a compassionate Metro Police officer stepped in with a simple act of kindness that turned an anxious moment into one of heartfelt Ubuntu.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (14 July 2026) – While travelling from Durban to Stanger recently, Mduduzi Gwabin realised too late that he needed cash to pay the toll fees ahead before he could reach his destination.

With not enough cash on hand and an urgent need to get to Stanger, Mduduzi approached a taxi driver at a nearby traffic light and asked whether he could spare R20. Instead of receiving help, he was met with mockery.

He tried another taxi driver, but once again had no luck.

Just as he was on the brink of giving up, Mduduzi noticed a Metro Police vehicle carrying several officers, including one female officer. He explained his situation to them, and in that moment of uncertainty, the female officer offered him a glimmer of hope.

Although she did not have money with her, she offered to send him R40 through a cash-send transaction to his cellphone number.

“Throughout the conversation, the lady saw how desperate I was. She called me just as I was about to turn away and leave. Out of humanity, she sent me a cash-send from her hard-earned money, and I went to the ATM to make the withdrawal,” Mduduzi recalled.

In the post, later shared by the official Durban Metro Police Service Facebook page, Mduduzi thanked law enforcement and said he believed the officer who helped him was Officer Chamane. The grateful man encouraged his followers to share the story and extend Ubuntu whenever the opportunity arises.

It was a small act, but one that carried great meaning. In a moment when Mduduzi felt embarrassed, stranded and unsure of what to do next, a local officer chose kindness over indifference. Her gesture also showed how our officers often serve not only by enforcing the law, but by recognising the humanity of those who need help most.
