In the face of unemployment and unexpected hardship, Nicole discovered her new beginning of stability was hidden among the “clutter of things” others have left behind. Now, she’s paying the kindness that saved her forward.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 January 2026) – We often hear the adage that one person’s “trash” is another’s treasure, and Nicole’s story illustrates this perfectly.

When her world came to an unexpected halt after she lost her job in 2021, the financial demands began to mount. Despite being a hardworking person, Nicole found herself struggling just to make ends meet. To get by, she began selling second-hand clothes, often earning R30 to R50 a day. During these tough times, she further reached out to the People4Purpose non-profit organisation with a brave request for help.

People4Purpose focuses on the provision of necessities to support people when they need it most – helping them move from a place of struggle toward stability and hope. It did this for Nicole by providing her with a single bakkie load of ‘clutter’ – donated second-hand items that would totally change her narrative.

Not only did those items help her through her storm, but Nicole is now part of the charity’s heartfelt mission to lift others during their darkest hours. She distributes clothing and other essentials to those in need in her community, paying forward the kindness that once saved her, too.

“Serving others brings joy. I’ve learned to give, not just receive. The struggle is real, but together we can make a difference. One hand that gives can save a community,” Nicole says.

People4Purpose is centred on the belief that everyone deserves access to life’s most essential needs, such as food and clothing. Through compassion, community partnerships, and purposeful action, relief and dignity are restored for those experiencing difficult times.

Nicole is one of the very first people the organisation had the privilege of assisting and is living proof of what is possible when resilience meets opportunity.

“To watch her journey unfold from that moment to the incredible success she is today has been a gift. When you support us, you aren’t just moving ‘stuff’, you are helping to rewrite stories and change lives,” the organisation shares.

If you have ‘clutter’ or can donate food that could help make someone else’s difficult path a little easier, get in touch with People4Purpose by visiting their Facebook page.
