NSRI Urge Public to Check Weather Before Adventuring SA Coastlines

The Western Cape coastline leading up to the Eastern Cape is currently in the grips of damaging winds and waves, so the NSRI has asked people to be cautious.

South Africa (21 May 2021) – The weather is starting to change, seas are getting rougher, and storms are brewing as winter rolls in. People along South Africa’s coastlines need to stay mindful of the weather to avoid being caught in a situation that would require being rescued.

The NSRI has sent out another public plea, encouraging people to check the weather before heading out onto the beaches and open water. This also includes hikers and beach walkers who may be surprised by changing tides.

“NSRI encourage boaters, paddlers, sailboarders, anglers, fisherman and coastal hikers to always check SA Weather Services weather alerts when preparing to go into and around the ocean.

The approaching winter weather has seen a number of cold fronts over the past few weeks and a cold front is currently causing rough seas and strong winds from the Western Cape coastline all the way around the coastline to beyond Port Alfred.

Caution is always advised during adverse weather conditions but preparations, before you embark on coastal journeys, should always include checking in on the SA Weather Services anticipated weather conditions and prepare accordingly with extra caution when adverse weather is expected.”

Yesterday the South African Weather Service issued warnings for the entire Western Cape coastline leading into the Eastern Cape, citing damaging waves and winds. The team also alerted to the potential capsizing of small vessels and irregular waves with the ability to sweep a person off their feet and into the ocean.
