South Africa has adopted the American mega sale known as Black Friday which comes along with mayhem and chaos but we prefer to focus on the tradition of being thankful.
South Africa (24 November 2017) – American traditions have slowly been adopted in South Africa, Halloween and Black Friday are the most popular ones to date. While Halloween is frowned upon by some, it is celebrated by others and hardly causes actual mayhem, the latter has become so intense that the reactions are starting to look very similar to US.
Have you ever seen those frenzied videos of people fighting, being arrested and being downright horrible? Sadly, this mentality has been adopted in South Africa, too. While browsing through social media, we were saddened to see video footage of chaos across the country.
We understand that Black Friday is here to stay; we just hope SA can reflect and try to do things a little differently! We also hope that South Africans will take a moment to adopt another American tradition. The tradition of being thankful!
Thanksgiving goes back in history as far as 1619 but the modern day tradition is slightly different from what it once was. Today family and friends gather around the table, serving foods that are popular in American culture and list the things they are thankful for.
The idea of listing things to be thankful for really resonates with us. We hope it does with you too! Taking a moment to be thankful can also be done on a more regular basis and not just one day a year.
At Good Things Guy, we decided to list a few of the things we are thankful for, and we encourage you to do so as well in the comments section.
We are thankful for:
- Having fantastic supporters like you.
- Being sent beautiful stories every day to share with the world.
- Seeing the love, respect and support our readers give each other on a daily basis.
- Being able to share stories about all the good things in South Africa.
- Having the opportunity to learn new things.
- Being able to witness kindness being shared everywhere we go.
- Having the freedom of expression.
- Creating hope and inspiring others by sharing the good news.
- Helping uplift people in need through writing funding stories.
- Being able to give back and do good in the real world during our everyday lives.
These are just a few of the things we are thankful for. We also challenge ourselves to do this every evening before bed.
