31 Organ Donor Warriors took on South Africa’s largest obstacle race… for good!
Johannesburg, South Africa (29 March 2022) – A team of 31 Organ Donor Warriors conquered South Africa’s largest obstacle race for a cause, Organ Donation!
The team known as “Ride for Hope” took on the Warrior on Saturday the 26th of March.
Ride for Hope was born in 2018 when Braam Blom cycled 1,800 km from Pretoria to Cape Town on a mountain bike, with the key aim to create awareness around organ donation, and specifically to register as many possible organ donors.
“Braam is a living donor, having donated a kidney to his wife Belinda in 2012. Currently, Belinda is back on the waiting list for another kidney and receives dialysis regularly.”
Their team shirts were sponsored by the North-West University and the Urology hospital. The heroes helped create much-needed awareness about organ and tissue donation and 34 new people signed up as organ & tissue donors.
It is estimated that less than 0.6% of eligible organ donors in South Africa are registered, and there are over 4,300 adults and children awaiting organ & corneal transplants in South Africa. Less than 600 people will receive a transplant and the “Gift of Life” this year, due to this critical shortage. Tragically many children and adults die whilst waiting for a lifesaving transplant, while others have to undergo dialysis treatment for many years while on the waiting list.
