Overstrand Municipality is bringing back its Humanitarian Network of Care to ensure local relief groups, churches, and Disaster Management coordinate seamlessly during emergencies like fires and floods.

Overstrand, South Africa (14 October 2026) – When disaster strikes, preparedness makes all the difference.

The Overstrand Municipality Disaster Management has announced that it is reviving its Humanitarian Network of Care, which connects local organisations, prompting them to work together to provide support to communities in emergencies when the need is urgent.

“When disasters such as fires, floods or other emergencies occur, there can be an immediate need for food, drinking water, clothing, temporary shelter and other essential items. While the Municipality coordinates the disaster response, community organisations, churches and other groups can often assist quickly with resources and support.” the municipality shares.

The network will essentially act as a hub for local organisations and Disaster Management to collaborate in the moments when preparedness matters, ensuring that the right kind of help reaches where it is needed as quickly as possible.

“It will help to avoid duplication and make sure the right assistance gets to the right place. This can prevent too much of one type of item being donated while other important needs are not being met. It will also improve communication and cooperation before, during and after an incident.”

The network will maintain a shared, up-to-date list of available resources and services, allow for each helper to have a clear role and area of support during incidents, and keep channels of communication open to help coordinate assistance quickly.

The municipality adds that letters have been sent to organisations that regularly work with Disaster Management, inviting them to become part of this initiative. Those who are interested in joining the Humanitarian Network of Care or finding out more can contact the municipality directly via the details shared in this post.
