A little temporary discomfort can go a really long way. Dedicated animal lovers braved a chilly night in their cosiest pyjamas to raise thousands for the animals at Kloof and Highway SPCA.
Kloof, South Africa (29 June 2026) – Animal lovers who weren’t afraid to brave the winter chill traded their warm beds for dog kennels, turning out in numbers and their blue supporters’ shirts for the Kloof and Highway SPCA Dog Box Challenge 2026.
Held on 5 June, this unique event tasked participants with being “locked” inside a dog kennel (without the dogs inside) for a full 24 hours. To earn their freedom the following day, these dedicated supporters had to sleep overnight in the kennels while actively rallying their networks to raise a minimum of R10,000 in “bail” money.
Beyond the camaraderie and high spirits, this initiative serves a vital dual purpose for both the SPCA and the animals that rely on its services.

For the participants, spending a night in their cosiest pyjamas exposed to the elements offers a firsthand glimpse into the vulnerability that shelter animals face daily, fostering a deeper community empathy for animal welfare. Crucially, the funds raised through these “bailouts” directly support the SPCA’s high operational costs – funding essential veterinary care, nutritious food, and facility maintenance.
The 2026 edition proved a huge success, with participants raising an incredible R364,222.13!
“Our SPCA is so blessed to have so many dedicated supporters, staff, volunteers and leaders who have all made this fundraiser a huge success,” Kloof and Highway SPCA thanked online.
“We truly have no words to describe the warmth in our hearts and the deep gratitude we feel. Because of you, lives will be changed in the most meaningful way. Thank you to every single person who supported, participated, donated and believed in this campaign. You made this possible.”
With the blankets stored away and hearts full all around, the annual fundraising challenge lived up to its cause, transforming a night of temporary discomfort into long-term safety, comfort, and second chances for hundreds of rescued animals.
