The 2000 Hearts initiative aims to bring vital support to babies and children who deserve a stable and loving safe space.
East London, South Africa (26 February 2026) – Guardians of Hope is a place of safety for 30 children aged newborn to six years.
The home cares for little ones who have been abandoned, surrendered for adoption, or left destitute, as well as those requiring palliative care. They’ve been operating for almost a decade now.
Currently, the organisation is facing a severe financial crisis.
They receive no government funding, and a recent drop in corporate donations has put their operations at serious risk. Sadly, the situation has become so critical that the team recently had to ask the Department of Social Development to find alternative placements for 22 of the children in their care within the next three weeks.
Still, there’s hope. And there’s a plan.
“Despite this, our fighting spirit remains strong. We believe that compassionate people will open their hearts and join our mission…” shares Guardians of Hope.
To prevent these children from losing their home and stability, Guardians of Hope has launched the 2000 Hearts Campaign.
The goal is to find 2000 individuals willing to commit to a monthly debit order of R150. This collective support provides the consistent funding needed to cover formula, nappies, medical care, and electricity. While R150 is a small amount on its own, when 2000 people commit, it ensures the home can remain open and continue caring for the children currently living there.
Led by Elaine Brenkman and a team of eight caregivers, the home provides 24-hour medical, physical, and psychological support, including weekly visits from a midwife to monitor developmental milestones.
Elaine says that so far, the organisation has received 64 sign-ups toward the 2000 needed to keep going.
“The support will secure the home for 30 vulnerable children. This is their safe place, their place of healing and their home while we work on finding them their forever families.” shares Elaine.
