With tears, a heavy heart and her hair falling out due to chemotherapy, Tynille Stead went to a local barbershop to shave her head. What happened next transformed a heartbreaking experience into a moment that will stay with Tynille forever.

Johannesburg, South Africa (13 June 2025) – To be seen and supported at your lowest. This was what three barbers did for Tynille Stead on one of her toughest days while battling stage 3 cancer.

Tynille was diagnosed in March and has undergone surgery and millions of tests before starting with her first round of chemo on 28 May.

And this week, the moment she had been dreading the most finally snuck up on her.

“My hair started falling out, and it really affected me so much more than I ever imagined, Tynille tells us.

“You know it’s coming, but when that reality hits, it’s heartbreaking!”

Driving home from work on Thursday, Tynille messaged her partner to tell him it was time to take the step and shave her head.

“We met at the barber after work, and with tears streaming down my face, we asked the guys to please shave my head.”

What happened next left Tynille in absolute awe. The Hair Colonel barbers picked up their clippers and started shaving their heads, too, right then and there. In one of Tynille’s lowest moments, their empathy lifted her.

“I was blown away by their support and kind words, and when I looked again, they were all shaving their heads in support of me!

“These guys turned one of the hardest things to do into an experience I will never ever forget,” Tynille says.

At a time when all seemed too hard to bear and in a world with so much going on, these barbers have helped Tynille look forward and tune out the negative. Their profound kindness turned a difficult day into a powerful reminder of the good in the world, leaving Tynille feeling supported, seen, and uplifted.

“They deserve all the support they can get. These guys have given me hope in humanity and just a general feeling of hope.”
