In 1999, a single moment on the rugby field changed everything for Alvairo. A catastrophic injury shifted him from the starting line-up to a wheelchair, leaving many to wonder what kind of future was left. But Alvairo had a different plan.

Malmesbury, South Africa (11 March 2026) – At 16 years old, Alvairo Williams’ life changed forever on the rugby field he dreamt would take him places. On 27 April 1999, he was injured while playing hooker for Schoonspruit Rugby Club.

Following his injury, Alvairo was confined to a wheelchair until 2001. Yet even during those challenging years, he set himself a powerful goal: to walk into his matric dance. Through sheer hard work, dedication and perseverance, Alvairo made that dream a reality, proudly walking in on two crutches. A moment that symbolised his refusal to let circumstances define him.

His story today is less about his injury, but more about the resilience he inherited from it, going on to make the most of his life while inspiring other injured rugby players who find themselves on a similar path.

After school, Alvairo continued to push forward, investing in his personal and professional growth. He has completed his Public Management N6 (PDE) qualification and successfully finished his Portfolio of Evidence (POE) in November 2025.

For the past 15 years, he has worked as an Administrative Clerk for the SAPS Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, a role he thoroughly enjoys and takes great pride in.

Rugby remains a passion. Outside of work, he enjoys spending his weekends watching club rugby – staying connected to the sport that once played a huge role in his life.

He recently received a catch-up visit from Shoneé Cornelissen of The Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund at his home in Malmesbury. The non-profit organisation, which supports all South African rugby players who have sustained catastrophic injuries while participating in the game, has played a significant role in supporting Alvario’s recovery.

He shines as a beacon of hope that a full life is possible after being dealt the unforeseen.

Looking ahead, Alvario is eager to further his studies in Supply Chain Finance or Human Resources within the next two to three years.

The Players’ Fund is incredibly proud of the progress Alvairo has made and admires his determination to continue upskilling himself and building an even brighter future.
