Animal Welfare Society South Africa (AWS SA) praised donors and volunteers for helping flood-affected communities through the recent storm.

Cape Town, South Africa (15 July 2024) – The Animal Welfare Society South Africa (AWS SA) has shared a post of praise for the help extended to them, as they, in turn, helped communities affected by flooding in the Western Cape.

“The storm-battered Western Cape has been declared a disaster area and sadly all of the indigent communities we serve have been badly impacted!”

The team got to see first-hand the loss and suffering experienced within the communities they serve. The team was led by CEO Dr John McMullen also known as “Dr Mac”; and they visited the communities of Springfield, Jabula, Kampies, Groenvlei and the Sandvlei informal settlements in Philippi.

AWS SA handed out food parcels and blankets for themselves and their pets, clothing, and some treats for the children; the team went door-to-door to see and hear firsthand what more they could do to alleviate the suffering.

“Many of the homes are underwater so encouraging pet owners to bring their pets inside seemed futile.

We did notice a few homes with raised beds, cupboards and chairs occupied by cats and dogs and decided to admit those left with no protection from the stormy weather into our safekeeping.

We also admitted several homeless animals and injured pets and together with the various Community Leaders have made arrangements to sterilise, vaccinate and microchip all of the pets from these beleaguered areas over the coming days.”

The work done on Sunday has gone a long way toward bolstering relationships between the community and AWS SA. This effort was so effective because of the many donors and volunteers.

“We would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to everyone who contributed towards the ongoing success of our Disaster Relief efforts and the communities for their warm welcome on an otherwise wet and chilly day.

The fact that we have been able to positively impact the lives of so many pets and people is largely thanks to you our donors and volunteers”

The team sent an update this morning that all the animals they work with have had the funds for their sterilisations covered.

“We have so many super-heroes to thank for their donations of blankets, pet food, funds, time and talent.

It is said that it takes a village to raise a child, in our case it’s taken a kind, generous animal loving community to make the lives of the animals dependent on us bearable at this tough time.

Your generosity means everything to us and the storm-affected communities we serve.

Thank you for your support, commitment and kindness and most importantly for your belief in doing good.

Together we raised enough money to sterilise and vaccinate all cats and dogs from the various beneficiary communities and cover the costs of providing those animals left homeless with a warm place to stay until the storm passes.

We still have a lot of work to do, and your support and donations helps us get that important work done https://www.payfast.co.za/donate/go/animalwelfaresocietyofsouthafrica
