A heroic male nurse from the Eastern Cape dived into a river to save a drowning woman who was trapped in her sinking car.

Ayanda works at the Zithulele Hospital in the Eastern Cape. Originally a mission hospital, and retaining some of this ethos, the Hospital, also known as Zithulele Mission Hospital, is situated in a deeply rural part of the beautiful Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape.

They are a 147 bed district hospital providing primary health care services for a catchment area of 130 000 people.

Ayanda works as an Accoucheur. It’s the proper word for a male midwife, but we think it also means hero.

Last weekend, while off duty, he witnessed a car plunging into a river. It landed upside down and a woman was trapped inside. While some ran away, he ran towards it.

Unable to find her, he rallied other bystanders to flip the car, discovering her on the backseat.

She wasn’t breathing when she was pulled from the vehicle so he administered mouth to mouth resuscitation and CPR.

With no time to wait for an ambulance he then arranged to get her to hospital, where she was stabilised, but later required transfer.

Well done Ayanda, you’re a real life hero!

In other circumstances, this would be front page news but luckily we have social media where the story has been shared thousands of times. Do your part and keep sharing the good news stories.
