The two best friends took on a muddy challenge dressed as princesses and raised money to buy books for GROW Educare, boosting literacy for children in need.
Mia Andrew (12) and Zara-Leigh Oliphant (12), from Rondebosch, Cape Town, worked together to raise money for books. They decided to crowdfund R20,000 by doing the Muddy Princess 5km obstacle course in Stellenbosch on 6 May. They worked to raise the money for an organisation called GROW with Educare Centres which helps children in low-income areas in early childhood development.
The best friends reached their crowdfunding goal. Mia and Zara managed to raise an incredible R20,000 for their book drive for GROW with Educare Centres.
They went on a book-shopping-spree with the GROW educators during the school holidays and chose hundreds of books for twenty GROW schools in the Western Cape.
In addition, they arranged for a bookshelf to be made for each of these schools. The plan is for each school to receive their own bookshelf filled with brand new colourful and age-appropriate books for pre-schoolers. Every month GROW head office will rotate the library books between the schools so that there are fresh exciting books for the children to read each month.
