With everything happening in the world, a few firefighters taking time to rescue a bird is a refreshing timeline cleanser; we have got the scoop!
Cape Town, South Africa (28 March 2022) – The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Department gave a helping hand to Mike, the Owl Box Man, who was trying to rescue a bird in distress.
Mike has a passion for the birds in his neighbourhood. He goes by ‘The Owl Box Man’ and works to protect the birds by always looking out for their best interests.
He started by building owl boxes to house the various owls in Cape Town because their habitats were being destroyed; he also works on releasing owls back into nature, and sometimes, he braves the wilds of cities to help rescue birds in distress.
Recently he called the local fire station for some help in rescuing a bird that was too high up for him to reach. The firefighters gladly assisted, and the bird was thankfully brought down to safety.
The bird had wedged itself into the luminous letters of a local fast-food franchise and wasn’t budging. It was at risk of falling, being so high off the ground while exhausted. Thankfully with some rest, it would be ok in no time at all. It just needed to be moved away from such a public setting.
“Thank you to the Bellville Fire Department for coming to help me!! Amazing compassion, professionalism and respect restored my faith in humanity tonight! Bird in good shape just needs some rest and tomorrow will be released back where he comes from. Kamo and Jacob of McDonald’s Bellville, Oakdale thank you for your patience with me while organising this rescue on a Friday night. God bless you all”
The bird is safely back in the wild, and its rescue has meant more awareness is raised for Mike’s cause. You can find out more about The Owl Box Man via the Facebook page here.
