Renowned South African DJ Black Coffee recently made history by becoming the first South African DJ to perform at Madison Square Garden. However, in a touching part of this huge chapter, the shirt he wore at the event honoured his mother and grandmothers so he could bring them with him to witness his ‘biggest moment’.
New York City, USA (11 October 2023) — Renowned South African DJ Black Coffee (Nkosinathi Maphumulo) recently made history at none other than New York City’s legendary Madison Square Garden by becoming the first South African DJ and producer to perform at the World’s Most Famous Arena.
“I am literally carrying my people to Madison Square Garden,” Black Coffee shared of the milestone moment’s significance, where he performed to a sold-out crowd of over 20,000 people last Saturday. In true reflection and symbolism of this sentiment, the outfit he wore for MSG had a hugely important dedication—one that enveloped his roots by honouring his mother and grandmothers.
Designed by his friend Mike Amiri, his headlining look for what was arguably the biggest show of Black Coffee’s career embraced a hand-beaded and embroidered shirt showcasing his mother and grandmothers.
