It is a new year and twelve eager children are getting ready to take part in the first Edu-Paw Canine Care Programme class of the year.

Durban, South Africa (06 January 2023)Edu-Paw‘s Canine Care Programme is gearing up for the first class of 2023. The team take 12 kids and their dogs through an 8-week Canine Care Programme. Working with the pairs to teach obedience skills and build strong bonds between the children and pets.

The Edu-Paw programmes are run through the Amanzimtoti SPCA. They work with children from surrounding communities. The work being done through the organisation helps children learn compassion for animals and leads entire communities to shift and prevent abuse and neglect of animals.

“We run a 8 week programme in canine care. We meet every Saturday morning from 8.30 – 11.30am. We take 12 children and their dogs through the programme dealing with every aspect of animal welfare bringing about a full understanding of the responsibility of owning and caring for a dog. Also, instilling in them a love and compassion for their animals which in time will be perpetuated as they become adults and will in turn teach their children to be responsible pet owners.

At the end of the 8 weeks we have a graduation ceremony and party for the kids to acknowledge they have successfully completed the programme. We then take the next 12 kids on the waiting list.”

When each child starts in the programme, their dogs are vaccinated, sterilised if needed and dewormed. They are given a collar, lead, bed, blankets, dog food and all the tools needed to raise and care for a dog.

Every week, the team feeds each of the dogs and gives the children and volunteers a juice and snack. They are hoping to connect with donors who can help them with juice and snacks each week. You can reach out to Edu-Paw via Facebook to lend a helping hand. There are many other ways to get involved too so be sure to see where you can get involved this year.
