With support from a community that believed in her, Itumeleng Lebese rose from Diepsloot to become a fearless advocate for girls’ rights, a published author, and a successful graduate – proving that a discovered voice can lead to limitless achievement.

Diepsloot, South Africa (11 December 2025) – The possibilities are endless when young people are given the opportunity to learn, gain skills, and discover their voice.

Itumeleng Lebese‘s story began in the humble background of Dieplsoot, where she found support, mentorship and a community that believed deeply in her potential. Through Afrika Tikkun’s programmes, such as the Ignite Programme and, in extension, the Young Urban Women Programme, she discovered her voice as an advocate for girls’ rights and began shaping her identity as a leader and changemaker.

The Ignite Programme is a dynamic after-school initiative which supports learners from Quintile 1–3 schools in South Africa. Through personalised academic support and diverse enrichment activities, the programme ensures every learner receives the resources and guidance needed for academic and personal success.

The Young Urban Women Programme further encouraged Itumeleng to fearlessly challenge gender inequality, biases, and violence within the townships where Afrika Tikkun operates.

Years later, Itumeleng has written and published two books and recently graduated with her qualification in PR and Communication.

These accomplishments add to her already impressive milestones, having travelled to London this year to represent Afrika Tikkun at the Spirit of Belron Challenge. According to the youth development organisation, Itumeleng stood not only for herself but for every young person who dares to believe that their story matters and that their future can reach beyond their beginnings. With every step she took, she carried both her dreams and theirs.

If you’ve ever wondered how impactful youth development programmes are in helping our young people tap into their potential and thrive, Itumeleng is a shining example.

Now at 23, the recent graduate is in the process of writing her third book and shows what young people can accomplish when they’re given a solid foundation to develop, are encouraged, and are given room to grow.

“They do more than overcome obstacles. They rise into their purpose and soar far beyond expectation,” Afrika Tikkun proudly said.
