Community Cook Up IY is working to make sure that children don’t go hungry and always have a full belly before they go to bed at night.
Community kitchens are popping up all over South Africa and are proving to be very successful. They are making sure that children in informal settlements get much-needed nutrition before they go off to bed.
With the current economic climate and the cost of living rising at a staggering rate, many low-income families are struggling to feed their children effectively. With the rise of unemployment, the risk of children going hungry is even higher.
Children need good nutrition to focus at school so if one is lacking, the other surely will too. The Community Cook Up in Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay, Cape Town, is working to combat this by cooking around 300 meals every Friday for the children.
The organisation relies fully on food donations from the public to make meals for the children of Imizamo Yethu informal settlement. They have asked us to share their information as well as ways people can help contribute to their cause.
The organisation needs the following:
- tinned food – beans, tomatoes, vegetables and so on.
- frozen vegetables
- stock cubes and salt
- rice
- protein – chicken, pork, stewing meat etc
- fruit
Drop off points are at Massimo’s Pizza Place and the Freshstop at Caltex in Hout Bay. Alternatively, the organisation are more than happy to collect any donations. You can arrange this via their Facebook page here.
The organisation has had so much help from Massimo’s, whose ethos about giving back to the community has been unwavering since its establishment. Massimo has featured on Good Things Guy twice before and we are so happy to see his charitable heart is still doing everything possible to make a difference.
We look forward to seeing the Community Cook Up IY thrive in 2019.
