A Cape Town couple is feeding hundreds of homeless people struggling in the COVID-19 lockdown.
Cape Town, South Africa (12 August 2021) – A couple from Cape Town have said that they will keep helping those suffering homelessness, even after enduring a near-eviction themselves when they couldn’t afford to pay rent.
Auden and Carmen Hector began their 123-movement initiative to provide warm food to 250 people without homes in Factreton three times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday).
“There, unfortunately, have been some nights where we had to sadly turn some people away as a result of limited resources,” said Auden.
“We wanted to give back to the community because, during the hard lockdown period, we were about to be evicted for non-payments to our landlord; we reached out to the community for assistance as my wife and I had lost our jobs,” the father-of-three added.
According to the Hector couple, people of all ages come to enjoy a warm meal made with love.
“At the end of the day, we had so much food donations being sent to us, we had to eventually start giving some stuff away for fear of them reaching its expiry date,” said Auden
Since 2020, the couple has been providing the needy with hampers of food. They mostly provide soup and biryani.
“It hasn’t always been easy, but seeing the smiles on people’s faces when they come to collect their food has been rewarding,” said Auden
They say they made it their life mission to aid hundreds of homeless people. And they hope to expand their initiative to other parts of the Mother City.
