Deaf TV Host Jabaar Mohammed has won the Golden Horn Award for Outstanding Person with a Disability Contributor at the South African Film and Television Awards!
South Africa (24 October 2023)—When Jabaar Cassiem Mohammed learned that he was nominated for the South African Film and Television Awards, he was as thrilled as he was surprised.
“Many in our society still see and treat our deafness and disability as a limit,” he shared with SAnews.
“When I got the email that I had been nominated, I was like, ‘for real? Me Jabaar, a Deaf person in the SAFTAs?”
But, this nomination was only the beginning of a recent successful streak for the talk show host, who went on to win the Golden Horn for ‘Outstanding Person with a Disability Contributor in South Africa’.

His show, ‘Accessibility with Jabaar’ (which you can catch on Cape Town TV) has played an important role in debunking misconceptions about disabilities and disadvantages through enlightening and stigma-challenging conversations. Its narrative-reframing approach aims to uplift and connect disabled communities while giving able-bodied people insight into the stories that are often overlooked.
As the first deaf person to have graduated from the University of the Western Cape and the Director for DeafSA Western Cape, Mohammed’s praises have been sung far and wide across the province in the deaf community and beyond.
As Megan Holmes, Ms Deaf International 2022 shared:
“You overcame so many obstacles to achieve this amazing accomplishment…your perseverance is an inspiration to many! Your love for Deaf community is one of the reasons you rise to the top 🤟 You are AWESOME!”
Commenting on the award himself, Mohammed said:
“Receiving this award was one of my best best best surprise gift ever in my entire life and wasn’t on my bucket list because my passion was to stop the barriers for us all in South Africa.”
