It takes a village to raise a child, and this week, the volunteers of Kaboentle Women Power came together to make sure every child walks through their school gates standing tall and smiling.

Diepkloof, South Africa (14 January 2026) – The children of Diepkloof headed back to class with an extra boost of self-esteem, thanks to the “Crowns of Confidence” campaign.

Led by the Kaboentle Women Power and Development Projects organisation, the initiative saw scores of youngsters gather at Diepkloof Square on Monday and Tuesday to get their hair braided and styled for free.

“The initiative was born out of a deep desire to restore dignity and confidence in children as they step into a new school year,” Nontokozo Zwane of Kaboentle shares with us.

“For many families, January is a time of financial strain, and something as simple as a haircut, a meal, or a supportive word can make a child feel seen and valued.”

Crowns of Confidence was about far more than just grooming. It was about affirming identity, creating community, and showing children that they are worthy of care and celebration.

Still catching her breath from the busy frenzy, Nontokozo says that the response from the community was overwhelming and affirming.

“On Day 1 we had over 117 children, and by Day 2 the numbers doubled. The joy on the children’s faces was unforgettable. Even when challenges arose with food shortages, space conflicts, and unmet promises, the heart of the campaign shone through.”

Though there were some teething pains, Nontokozo says that the many volunteers, partners, and sponsors stood firm.

“What mattered most was the smiles, the laughter, and the children saying, “Bye mam, I love you.” That moment captured the true success of the initiative.”

Kaboentle managed to successfully create a safe, affirming space for hundreds of children, worthy of national coverage across various media.

“To be recognised on such platforms in less than a week was humbling, but the real pride comes from knowing that our volunteers gave their all, and our children walked away with confidence and joy. It was proof that resilience and community spirit can overcome even the toughest challenges.”

Kaboentle Women Power is a non-profit organisation founded by Monica Moagi and is rooted in legacy, empowerment, and service. It is run by men and women committed to uplifting communities through education, advocacy, and practical support.

“Our focus is on creating platforms where dignity is restored. We try to fight GBVF whether through Back to School campaigns, counselling for learners, or initiatives that strengthen families. We trust that these structures will bring hope and dignity within the community as we continue to fight economic and intellectual poverty.”

Kaboentle believes in women and children as anchors of transformation, and its work is about turning care into courage, and courage into lasting change.
