A discarded skateboard, once unwanted, became a treasure beyond measure for a young boy in East London!

East London, South Africa (12 February 2025) – It’s crazy how “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. It’s a catchy phrase that holds so much truth!

We were beautifully reminded of this truth after learning about how Christmas came very early for one little boy in East London when he received an unexpected gift from the Helping Those In Need team.

Sharing the priceless moment on social media, the co-founder of the non-profit organisation, Matthew Peake said that he had kept a donated skateboard in his bus for several days, with one special person in mind.

Photos captured the heartwarming moment the boy received his gift. His joy was palpable. He clutched it close before excitedly trying it out in his neighbourhood.

“We handed over the skateboard and boy oh boy it wasn’t even seconds and he was off with a big smile,” shared Matthew.

“The joy it brings my soul to see a smile is absolutely priceless!”

Helping Those In Need, run by local heroes Matthew and his wife Marion, supports many homes and families in need, and often witnesses children in need of just a little love and an unexpected surprise.

The boy’s innocent and genuine joy has easily warmed our hearts. His simple yet moving story is a beautiful reminder that what we no longer need can be exactly what someone else is hoping for, and that even small gestures can create lasting memories and brighten others’ lives.

If his excited reaction is anything to go by, he’ll treasure that skateboard for many years to come!

“Thank you to every donor for donating your unwanted goods towards those in need. Today you brightened not just my day but this little lad. May the Lord bless you” Matthew added.
