They say timing is everything, and for one little boy, having a firefighter for an aunt turned out to be the ultimate blessing!
Cape Town, South Africa (04 March 2026) – Every now and then, we come across touching stories of newborns who catch their mothers off guard with unexpected arrivals – almost always far from a hospital.
One baby boy simply couldn’t wait to enter the world when his mother found herself in the advanced stages of labour at home and without transport. Thankfully, the father’s sister, Firdous Seat, happened to be a firefighter who possessed both the calmness and skill necessary to ensure a safe delivery.
“My brother’s girlfriend was in labour when we got the call. They live in Maitland as well, just down the road from us, and didn’t have any transport. They contacted us to organise an ambulance for them, but she was already bleeding,” Seat shares.
She offered to take the mother-to-be to the hospital, but upon arrival, realised she was already bleeding, crowning and was against being moved to the car.
“I thought to myself, what am I going to do. I called control and asked if they could send a pump just to assist if anything goes wrong with the baby, since she [the mom] is high risk,” she recalls.
Firefighters from the Salt River Fire Station were dispatched to the Maitland home, but by the time they arrived, Seat had already delivered a healthy baby boy – her nephew!
The new mom and her bundle of joy were assessed before being escorted to Mowbray Maternity Hospital.

Auntie truly saved the day in this unexpected home arrival!
“Our firefighters have a proud track record of bringing newborns into the world, and this case is no different, but all the more sweet and touching, considering the family connection. Well done to Firefighter Seat for remaining calm under pressure, and congratulations to her and her family on the new arrival,” shared Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
