Tracey Christie ran her first full marathon, and used the momentous occasion to raise funds for the “Rest ur Ass” donkey sanctuary, raising over R20,000.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 October 2022) – Tracey Joy Christie set her heart on running for the “Rest ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary” and raising R15,000 to go towards the care if the donkeys at the sanctuary. She managed to complete her first full marathon and exceed her funding goal!

To raise funds for the sanctuary, Tracey had invited the public to sponsor each donkey’s virtual airfare so a small part of them could be with Tracey in Cape Town when she ran the Cape Town Marathon.

“I have asked people to pick their favourite donkey and sponsor him/her a virtual plane ticket to come to Cape Town with me.

They have three options
First-class R200
Business R150
Economy R100″

While the donkeys may not really be flying, this form of fundraising has proven to be a great success for Tracey. She managed to raise over R20,000 towards her goal of R15,000. Aside from the funding goal, Tracey successfully completed the marathon in a time of 4hrs 57min. She shared the happy message with us, saying she had survived it. It is clear to see that while the run may have been tough, she was filled with joy at finishing it.

She started running a short time ago but dedicated herself to completing half marathons until she had built up the stamina to take on a full one.

The Rest Ur Ass is a donkey sanctuary based in Johannesburg. They provide a forever home to abused and abandoned donkeys. The sanctuary is currently caring for 107 donkeys. Last year we shared the story of Grace, who was saved thanks to an expensive but life-saving leg surgery.

You can check out the donkeys by visiting the Rest ur Ass Facebook page here.
