A volunteer from Belgium visited the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa and adopted a pavement special, giving her a life fit for a princess.

Cape Town, South Africa (14 March 2022) – Let’s be honest, we have all daydreamed about being told that we are secretly royalty and whisked away to some beautiful castle in a faraway land; then someone honks their horn because the light has changed and we drive away, back into the daily reality of life. Well, that dream wasn’t so far-fetched for pavement special turned princess Lyla.

Lyla was a rescue living at the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWSSA) in Phillipi, Cape Town. She is a husky looking mix-breed, and her life is about to change in the best way! When AWSSA found her six months ago, she was a scared and timid little dog that had been tied up to a disused shipping container on their premises.

AWSSA hosts volunteers from around the world, and recently they welcomed volunteer Nyrio from Belgium. Nyrio and his sister Nyra had raised over R16,000 for AWSSA by selling waffles in Belgium. Nyrio visited the organisation in Phillipi, and that is when he met Lyla. He was so taken by her character and sweet nature that he decided to adopt her.

“Lyla is adorable and as bright as a button! Always eager to please and ready to learn. We asked one of our volunteers from the Netherlands to teach her a few basic commands in Dutch to help her with the transition, and her ability to grasp the basics is quite astounding. She is now fully trilingual and just whisper wil je gaan wandelen(do you want to go for a walk), and she immediately responds with a bounce in her step. We wish Nyrio and our little canine expat everything of the best as they embark on what promises to be a magical journey.”

“Nyrio has decided to name her Lyla in keeping with the family’s tradition of a “Y” in their first names that is meant to represent good fortune.” – Allan Perrins Head of Communications, Resource Development and Fundraising.

The family landed in South Africa on the 7th of March and have spent days bonding with Lyla. They have made all the necessary arrangements and leave South Africa, with Lyla too, on the 21st of March 2022. Lyla will head to the Netherlands before settling in Belgium with Nyrio.

AWSSA plan to use the massive donation to further its sterilisation drives in the Cape Flats, putting an end to unwanted cats, dogs, kittens and puppies.

Lyla went from being an abandoned pavement special, to a life and story fit for a princess!

And they lived happily ever after—the End.
