Walking into a local security office changed everything for a grandmother who was desperately searching for her missing grandson.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (11 January 2026) –  She walked into Reaction Unit South Africa’s (RUSA) offices, tearful and completely overwhelmed.

A grandmother had lost her nine-year-old grandson while they were shopping in the Verulam CBD, and she had no idea what to do next. She didn’t know how to use a cellphone properly. She didn’t know who to call. But her child was gone, and she needed help.

True to their reputation for being reliable local heroes, RUSA stepped in.

Nelisa, a member of the local security service, sat with the grandmother, translating and gently reassuring her while she explained what had happened…

She had been shopping in the CBD with her two grandsons. At some point, she realised she’d misplaced a few items and sent the older boy back to the shop to fetch them while she waited near the taxi rank. He never came back. With no phone skills and no idea where to start looking, panic set in. She searched for him on her own for nearly two hours before finally walking into the RUSA offices for help.

With limited information to work from and no photos of the missing boy, the team began the search immediately.

Officers were dispatched across the CBD, focusing on the taxi rank and the shop the child had been sent to. Minutes later, one of the RUSA members spotted a young boy wandering the busy streets.

It was him. The missing grandson.

He was carefully approached and identified before being brought safely back to base, along with his younger brother, who the grandmother had left with a nearby vendor while she ran to get help.

When officers spoke to the nine-year-old, he explained that he had lost his way while going to collect the missing items from the shop. This led him deep into the CBD’s streets. In total, they had been separated for almost two hours.

The emotional moment he walks through the door and reunites with his granny is everything. Clip below. You can also watch the full video here (from 5:50 onwards).

“That’s the good part of our work,” RUSA shared. “We live in a very dangerous society and anything can happen. She was looking for him for two hours and couldn’t find him. When he walked through the door and she saw him, she became emotional – that makes it all worth it.”
