Kilimanjaro

Letshego Zulu summited Mount Kilimanjaro in honour of her late husband, Gugu Zulu who sadly passed away after attempting the same climb in 2016.

The late Gugu Zulu was a South African Race Car driver, he started his career in 1999 and was affectionately known as “the fastest brother in Africa”. His career spanned many years with some key moments such as being a presenter for the local car show ‘Car Torque’, appearing in the Hollywood film ‘Lord of War’ and winning a quite few prestigious racing awards.

Gugu and his beautiful wife, Letshego, decided to join the 2016 Trek4Mandela, which involves climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in honour of Madiba and raising funds for girls to access sanitary towels. Gugu was an adventurer to his core!

Sadly during the summit in 2016, Gugu began to have breathing problems and was rushed down the mountain, with his wife Letshego. He passed away shortly afterwards leaving behind his wife, daughter and family.

Letshego decided to join the 2017 Trek4Mandela to honour her late husband. The event has remained the same, raising funds for young girls sanitary needs but this year the event was being dedicated to Gugu.

“For some of us, it was a promise we made to Gugu on the occasion of his passing that we will return to the mountain, and we did. We’d like to thank South Africans for the support they’ve given us.” – Sello Hatang, The Nelson Mandela Foundation

Letshego made a promise to erect the South African Flag on top of Mount Kilimanjaro and she succeeded! Before leaving she addressed the media at O.R. Tambo saying,

“I will continue supporting this cause dispite what life throws my way! Yes we lost a great man, but it doesn’t mean that everything has come to an end. I’m excited to be going on this trek with an amazing group of individuals this year to honour the life of my late husband”

She summitted to the top on the anniversary of Gugu’s passing and celebrated the birthday of our beloved Tata Madiba. Letshego showed us all the power of love with her strength and dedication to finish what her husband started. Going forward with love in your heart, instead of fear and anger, can lead you to achieve anything!
