Welton is in the hospital right now, unsure of whether his leg can be saved. Thankfully, there’s already a community in his corner.

Johannesburg, South Africa (17 October 2025) – An utterly shocking act of recklessness has turned into a story of community kindness. South Africans have rallied behind Welton, an Uber Eats driver who was badly injured in a hit-and-run accident in Blairgowrie.

Welton was struck by a drunk driver while out on delivery on Wednesday. The driver raced away from the scene, leaving Welton, his bike, and the food scattered across the road.

Thankfully, kind bystanders Samantha and Sarah were at a nearby garage and rushed to help him, as security company Beagle Watch also jumped in, intercepting and apprehending the driver further up the road.

They confirmed that he was, in fact, drunk and fully aware that he had hit “something”.

On the scene, it was clear that Welson was in a lot of pain with his left leg badly damaged on impact.

“[He was] crying out in pain and his ankle hanging loosely from his leg. First response confirmed his femur was broken and his ankle totally snapped,” shares Samantha.

They waited 45 minutes for the ambulance to arrive and transport him to Helen Joseph for medical care. Now, he’s awaiting surgery, and there hasn’t been any confirmation of whether his leg can be saved or not.

Welton has a difficult journey ahead. He won’t be able to work with his severe injuries, and he’s the breadwinner of his family.

“One thing is for sure, Welton is facing extensive down-time and recovery, which is going to massively impact his life as he’s a bread winner and relies on his Uber work for an income,” shares Samantha.

Thankfully, he has an army of kind and caring strangers who have shown up for him in the most amazing way.

As Welton now waits for medical care, Samantha and Sarah have started a BackaBuddy campaign to crowdfund and help alleviate some of the pressure, and show him that there is still good in this world, after he has just experienced the worst of it.

After only six hours, over R25,000 has been raised to support Welton and his family, surpassing the initial fundraising goal of R20,000.

“Funds will all go to Welton and his family, to ensure he can rest and recover while still keeping a roof over their heads and food in their tummies. If you can, please donate and share – no amount is too small when someone is in such need.”

Donations are still open. Click here if you would like to support.
