A beacon of strength both on and off the field, Hougaard’s journey through adversity has inspired fans and friends alike.

Derick’s year took an unexpected turn when he faced a battle against respiratory pneumonia, landing him in the care of the dedicated medical team at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria. A true testament to his unwavering spirit, Derick fought valiantly, even finding himself in a coma for a daunting 13 days after being discovered unconscious at his home. It’s a story that grips the heart and reminds us all of the fragility of life and the courage required to overcome.

In a moment that had fans across the nation holding their breaths, Derick graced the airwaves once more. His first radio interview since his triumphant battle with adversity took place on the immensely popular Jacaranda FM show ‘The Drive with Rob and Roz.’ Led by the dynamic duo of presenters Rozanne McKenzie and Rob Forbes, the interview was a beacon of inspiration and insight into Derick’s journey.

Amidst the tales of struggle, Derick’s words ring true: “I look a lot better than I feel.” The recovery road, though long, has been a testament to his inner strength. “I still feel a little weak and I am always out of breath,” he admits. The road to recovery isn’t without its challenges, as the ventilator left its mark, but Derick’s spirit remains unbreakable. As he reflects on those first days after emerging from the coma, he acknowledges the enormity of his survival, sharing, “It’s terrifying thinking how this affected my family, my parents, my kids, and Nádine.”

But that’s not where the tale ends; in fact, it’s only the beginning of a new chapter. Derick has exciting news for his devoted fans: a forthcoming documentary series that promises to captivate hearts and minds.

Sharing his excitement, Derick reveals, “It’s the longest and the most expensive production that I have ever done. I wanted to be brutally truthful and vulnerable when I tell my story. This was a journey for the books.”

Rian Van Heerden, the driving force behind the documentary, reminisces humorously about his efforts to bring Derick on board.

Reflecting on Derick’s strength, he shares, “There’s something about this guy. He keeps getting back up again.” With a deep-rooted faith in Derick’s resilience, Rian’s conviction never wavered. He adds, “I had this odd sense of calm, even as the world seemed to crumble around me. Of course, he’d come through this.”

As Derick continues his recovery journey at home, he’s been moved beyond words by the outpouring of love from fans.

Fondly known as the ‘Liefling of Loftus’, he expresses, “Witnessing this level of care makes you feel cherished and reminds you that people still want you in their lives.” With deep gratitude, Derick extends his thanks to the unwavering supporters who’ve stood by him. “To everyone, wherever you are, thank you for your prayers,” he says. “Thank you for showing your care and support.
