A Johannesburg man received a random act of kindness while shopping at a local hardware. This is our South Africa… this is our people!

Schalk van der Merwe, author of the book “Living The Dream Through Africa” found himself in a predicament where he had driven all the way to a shop, but had forgotten his wallet at home.

Schalk was at the ‘Robot Hardware’ in Booysens Road in Johannesburg last Thursday when he received a small (but big) random act of kindness that made him appreciate South Africa and South Africans so much more.

“When I got to the till to pay for my goods that I bought I realized that I left my wallet at home. This Afrikaans speaking lady by the name of Pretty behind the till did not hesitate and took money from her handbag and paid my bill of R 36-00 in full.”

He was most surprised that she did not take his contact details down, she had just paid without expecting anything in return and then there were also the other people in the queue that were all willing to assist him.

“To top it all off, an Indian guy behind me was also prepared to pay my bill!?!

In times like these, it warms my heart that there are still people in this country that care about each other. I think we can build a nation with such people.”

Schalk was so incredibly thankful, and even it was a small act of kindness, it really did fill his heart with pride for our country so he returned the following day with the money and some chocolates for Pretty.

Schalk posted the picture asking people to please share the story in order to get this negative spirit in our country to a positive spirit among our people and the response has been incredibly positive.

Dee Hudson posted: “This is what we South Africans are really like.”

Jill Buckler added: “Lovely story. There are many good stories that happen daily. They are what keep my heart singing.”

Mark James commented: “Love, kindness, respect and common decency will always triumph. Heartwarming story, thank you for posting.”
