3,500 South Africans come together to sing in unity! Koolulam

Thousands of South Africans from various religions recently joined together to sing a song in unity.

On October 14th, 2018, Koolulam partnered with King David Schools, Johannesburg, South Africa, and gathered 3,500 South Africans to celebrate the 70th anniversary of King David Schools and the of establishment of the State of Israel. Within 45 minutes, they learned a new arrangement of OneRepublic’s “I Lived”.

Koolulam is a social-musical initiative aimed at bringing people together – students, families and the greater community. The idea is to stop everything for a few hours and just sing – together.

Each mass gathering is unique, with the aim of creating social harmony where it is most needed, says Or Taicher, Koolulam’s artistic and creative director.

The song was selected for it’s important lyrics about truly living. Taicher believes that South Africans are “very serious, inhibited people, who need to live a little and be free”.

“I did it all,
I owned every second that this world could give,
I saw so many places, the things that I did,
Yeah with every broken bone,
I swear I lived”

The project enables its participants to enjoy the feeling of togetherness through a deep communal experience – the sounds and voices coming together to create a social choir, full of hope and optimism to produce a powerful, unified, harmonious musical sensation.
