A group of mamas were invited to attend a 4-day quilting programme as a way to equip them with the skills to further their employment options, their bags are beautiful!
Quilters of Clover Mama Afrika, Clovers CSI project, recently reunited for a four-day quilting course with Rachel du Toit in Centurion. The training course was to teach the Mama’s how to quilt a Faux Chenille denim bag which uses the same quilting technique similarly used by the Japanese but a bit more complex. Rachel says that the technique can be used in various ways and is not just limited to designing handbags. The Mama’s excelled at implementing this new technique and were thrilled with the results they achieved on their first attempt.
“I am really happy to see the Mama’s embracing the new quilting skills with such a positive attitude” – Professor Elain Vlok , Founder of Clover Mama Afrika
One is never too old to stop learning as there is always room for improvement in whatever we do. We are confident that the Mama’s will use and transfer their newly acquired skill with their communities to increase their income channels.
The Clover Mama Afrika project started as a humble project 14 years ago and has since developed into Clover’s flagship CSI programme. The project has to date appointed 44 Mamas throughout South Africa. These remarkable women collectively care for over 12 800 children and 1 200 elderly people, many of which are abused, orphaned, homeless and vulnerable.
Clover Mama Afrika empowers these Mamas with vital skills such as cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, business management, food gardening and bread baking skills.
Over and above the training sessions these women are all supplied with the necessary tools, equipment, and infrastructure to create an income for themselves and give back to their communities. For more information on the Clover Mama Afrika project visit the website here.
