Matthew Murray and Charles Raw are well within their 1,222km run from Port Alfred to Cape Town to raise funds for a rural KZN school struggling with overcrowding and a dilapidated administrative building.

Knysna, South Africa (17 February 2025) – Already over two weeks into their ambitious 35-day run from Port Alfred to Cape Town, Matthew Murray and Charles Raw are covering the kilometres with one main goal in mind: to raise funds for Velakukhanya Primary School in KwaNgwenya!

These runners with heart hope to raise the R2.3 million needed to renovate a damaged admin block and build two new classrooms at the rural KZN school, all the while showcasing the natural beauty of South Africa along their route.

The overcrowded school has an average of over 60 students per classroom and an administrative block that is structurally unsound and without space to effectively manage the school’s operations and confidential documentation.

Covering an average of 39km a day, Matt and Charles embarked on their adventure on Saturday, 1 February and hope to finish in Cape Town on 7 March.

They both grew up in the Natal Midlands and were fortunate to spend much of their young years enjoying the great outdoors and the bush.

Matt’s wife Sandra gave birth to their first child in January this year, and they will be accompanying him along the way, as well as Charles’ wife Micheala and their 20-month-old.

To say that Matt and Charles and their families are taking on an epic challenge on top of a hectic family life is an understatement – but their positive energy, optimism and determination are unyielding and infectious!

You can follow their exciting journey on their Running Wild Facebook page.

To support Matt and Charles’ fundraising goal by donating to their GivenGain crowdfunding page. They also have UK-based fundraiser and a US-based fundraiser, if you are donating from outside South Africa.
