McDonald the pony was overridden to the point of exhaustion. However, a happier chapter was just around the bend thanks to people who stepped in, stood up and showed McDonald that home should mean love.
Atlantis, South Africa (21 May, 2023) — A Western Cape pony’s story took a turn for the hopeful toward the end of last year and he recently found his happily ever after.
In his previous home, McDonald (who went by a different name at the time) had been overridden to the point of exhaustion and beaten when he couldn’t move anymore—something his owner never seemed to allow.
Residents in Robinvale became concerned about their neighbour, noticing that kids in the area were riding him up and down the street day and night, as the Cape of Good Hope SPCA shared.
Toward the end of last year, one called the SPCA for assistance, hoping something could be done to give McDonald a better chance.
Soon, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s inspector Wayne Hector was on the case. Pulling up to the scene, he saw the pony surrounded by kids, forced to give them tired rides. Upon seeing the vehicle they scattered and Wayne raced to the gentle giant’s rescue.
Residents went to help the inspector, with one offering her garden space while a horsebox was on its way for his non-negotiable relocation.
The alleged owner emerged, but it was too late. Wayne already had the seizure notice in hand, and after dropping that mic, McDonald was re-named and taken to the SPCA’s Horse Care Unit for examination.
McDonald remained in the safe care of the unit for a few months, until something wonderful happened.
Jeese Roode, who works as a tutor, helping homeschooled families when she’s not rescuing horses, decided not only to support McDonald but invite the pony to be part of the family.

And in another dose of animals getting their happily ever afters, a Dorp sheep and donkey duo also found their forever home recently, with the inseparable rescue pair adopted together to live their days on a gorgeous wine farm.
