Daniel is all smiles back at work, supporting his team and the animals at the SPCA, after a dog bite hospitalised him in January.
Johannesburg, South Africa (18 February 2026) – Remember Daniel from the Midrand SPCA? The groundskeeper and caretaker who was bitten while on duty a few weeks ago? We’ve got a happy update!
Over Valentine’s weekend, the Midrand SPCA shared some good news.
“After the frightening dog bite incident that shook our team, we’re happy to share some heartwarming news – Daniel Musuko is healing well and in good spirits!”
The outpouring of support for Daniel showed that South Africans care about animal welfare and the heroes Daniel, who keep operations safe and comfortable behind the scenes. Even when there is risk involved. And there often is, as far as surrendered animals go – especially in the case of aggressive dogs.
Like we said before – aggressive dogs aren’t aggressive for no reason. Daniel’s traumatic incident served as a reminder about the role we (society) play in shaping our pets’ behaviour. Confinement, chaining, a lack of training, and a gap in understanding all contribute towards scenarios where dogs are aggressive, violent, and unpredictable.
Thankfully in this case, Daniel is healing well and has returned back to work.
“Daniel would like to thank everyone for the incredible support, messages and well-wishes he received. The kindness shown to him reminded us just how special this community is, and this Valentine’s Day he’s truly feeling the love.”
A small but meaningful gesture that came from Daniel’s team made us smile…
When Daniel was bitten, he could have lost an eye if it weren’t for the protective sunglasses he had been wearing. Those shades became a write off, but he recently received a replacement pair!
“A special thank you as well to our General Manager, Inspector Pam Pretorius, for replacing the sunglasses that protected his eye during the attack — a thoughtful gift with a very big meaning.”
From Daniel and the Midrand SPCA team: “Happy Valentine’s Day, and thank you for always showing love not only to us, but to the animals in our care.”
