South Africans have raised a remarkable R300,000 in just five days toward supporting Nico Botha as he bravely faces metastatic Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. The generous donations will lift a very heavy financial burden for the Botha family and greatly impact Nico’s journey.
Roodepoort, South Africa (31 January 2025) – Nico Botha, a young man with so much promise for an amazing future, faces the toughest battle of his life yet.
Diagnosed with metastatic Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer, Nico is currently fighting every day to overcome this life-threatening illness that has turned his and his family’s world upside down.
His family has approached this heartbreaking journey with inspiring strength and dedication. However, the emotional and financial burden has been too heavy to carry alone.
Nico’s treatment involves nine initial chemotherapy cycles, hospitalisation, surgery to remove the affected areas, and additional chemotherapy and radiation to ensure the best possible outcome. This journey is proving to be a long and expensive uphill battle.
Despite the family’s best efforts, medical insurance only covers about a quarter of the total treatment costs, adding significant financial strain to an already challenging situation, shares family friend Lian Calitz.
However, after sharing Nico’s story and creating a BackaBuddy page, people were so moved that a generous R300,000 was raised within just five days of the crowdfunding initiative.
This contribution speaks volumes of the kindness and Ubuntu of our people who are ever-ready to help a fellow friend facing great adversity. The funds will greatly assist with the overwhelming medical expenses associated with Nico’s treatment and ultimately help a young man focus on his fight and come out even stronger!
