The NSRI has welcomed a new rescue base in Witbank, Mpumalanga that will serve the community and boost in-land water safety with smoother operations.

Witbank, South Africa (25 February 2025) — In a big move for inland water-safety, the NSRI has cut the ribbon on its new rescue base in Mpumalanga’s Witbank with volunteers settled and relishing in their new, dedicated space.

Station 35 has been dubbed a “significant milestone” for both the non-profit and the community who will benefit from the base. A space long overdue, ‘Station 35’  operated from a small boat shed at the Witbank Yacht & Aquatic Club for years as Station Commander Travis Clack explains. Here, equipment was scattered across the premises; making it difficult for operations to be streamlined most effectively.

“Having all our items, vessels, and gear together in one room or one base makes a big difference, obviously in time and when launching. It’s a lot easier on the crew,” shared the Station Commander.

The new rescue base has been a long time in the making. Its need was established all the way back in 2014, but the site it now calls home was only handed over in 2024 following hurdles like tender-rounds and building within budget constraints.

Looking forward, the team hope to assemble a watertrailer to reach the many calls that are based tens of kilometres away from Witbank.

Beyond the advantage of having one space for equipment and making progress in terms of inland water safety services, it’s also hugely important for the volunteers.

As regional rep for inland stations Gerhard Potgieter says, “It gives the crew and community a sense of a belonging. It’s a beacon showing NSRI’s commitment to water safety in the area.”
