In 2022, Lister Maseko took her pup, Nicky, to the Boksburg SPCA; he was diagnosed with Parvo – Now, having survived, Lister makes sure Nicky gets his vaccinations to keep him safe.

Boksburg, South Africa (13 January 2023) – The Boksburg SPCA has shared a heartwarming story of the bond shared between Lister Maseko and her pup Nicky, and how the community helped the pair stay together after a terrifying Parvo diagnosis in 2022.

Lister arrived at the Boksburg SPCA in early 2022 carrying Nicky on her back. Nicky, who was four months old at the time, had been a little bit sickly, so Lister wanted to make sure he was okay. The team did a parvo snap test which came back negative, but they were concerned he had Biliary.

The Boksburg SPCA needed to send Nicky to a private vet for Biliary diagnosis and treatment. Supporters of the SPCA crowdfunded the amount needed, and Nicky was sent for further treatment.

As it turned out, Nicky did, in fact, have Parvo which was caught very early and treated. Nicky survived and was reunited with Lister after his treatment had ended.

“We appealed to our fabulous supporters to assist us with the cost of Nicky’s treatment, and YOU all rose to the challenge!

Luckily for Nicky, being older and the fact the virus at been diagnosed at a very early stage, Nicky beat the odds and survived the dreaded Parvo! His homecoming was something to behold, and the love from Nicky towards Lister and her family brought us to tears!”

Now a full year later, Lister still carries Nicky on her back. She arrived at the SPCA this week to get Nicky’s annual vaccinations done.

After learning just how dangerous diseases can be for dogs, Lister plans on visiting the SPCA every year so that Nicky can get his vaccinations and stay healthy.

We love the bond this pair share. May they have many beautiful years of love and friendship between them.
