A hiker’s day out on Lion’s Head took an unexpected twist. Thankfully, one ranger’s kindness (and serious leg strength) ended it with gratitude instead of panic!
Cape Town, South Africa (17 November 2025) – Table Mountain National Park Field Ranger Robbie van der Ross and a Ranger Corporal were recently called out after a 70-year-old hiker injured her ankle while making her way down Lion’s Head.
She had strained her left foot badly enough that walking was no longer an option, especially on the steep and very rocky descent.
The team reached her, assessed the situation, and without hesitation, Robbie knelt down and offered the simplest but most human solution. He’d carry her.
And down the mountain they went. Full-on piggyback mode. Robbie’s proudly South African socks stuck out with each careful step.
It wasn’t a quick walk either. Anyone who’s hiked Lion’s Head knows the path can be tricky even with both ankles working, so carrying another person takes strength and faith in your strong legs!
SANParks shared the story on Facebook, thanking the ranger for going above and beyond.
“Robbie immediately offered his assistance by carrying the elderly hiker on his back to ensure her safe descent. Thank you, Robbie, for your kindness and for assisting our visitor back to safety. Well done and keep up the great work!”
In a city (rumour has it, one of the world’s happiest and best overall) where mountains draw people from around the world, heroic stories like this one highlight the people who make those ‘bucket list’ adventures safe. The rangers who know every path, every ridge, and every risk, and still show up ready to help.
Robbie didn’t just carry someone down the mountain, he also lifted the whole community’s spirits while he was at it. Some comments that make this story even better:
“He was stronger ‘cause he had his Springbok jersey on,” wrote Ashley Aldworth.
“Trees for Legs Robbie!” said Paul Engelbrecht.
“Never fear when Robbie Van Der Ross is near. Thanks buddy for your proactiveness,” shared
Anthony Van Rhyn.
