A group of female comedians and fellow allies unite to raise funds for the Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust while making everyone laugh.

Cape Town, South Africa (05 May 2022) – The Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust has been working to support women affected by the rising Gender-Based Violence numbers. In the hopes of bringing some laughter during these trying times, the team have set up a comedy fundraiser featuring some of South Africa’s funniest female and allied comedians.

These are the comedians joining the line-up for a good cause.

Nicola Date

Fresh off the stage from the fabulously heartfelt Breaking the Closet this February is the host for the evening and producer Nicola Date. Hailing from Johannesburg, Nicola is a jack of all trades and lover of creative exploration. Her extensive experience spans events, theatre performance, design, PR, and copywriting. Nicola recently launched her new business, Compass Rose Collection, a lifestyle brand, with co-owner Heine J.van As and is content production manager for a digital marketing company.

Saya Pierce-Jones

The headline act, Saya Pierce-Jones, is a familiar face and voice in the Cape Town media scene and is a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Saya is a passionate advocate for woman’s rights and GBV prevention. When she’s not seeking the truth, she can be found on stage as a hilarious stand-up comedian.

Tumi Mkhawana

Tumi Mkhawana was born in Mpumalanga, bred in Pretoria, but calls Limpopo her home. Her origin is about as confusing as her actual age!

Vee Morton

Vee Morton is a Durban-raised comic whose humour varies from tongue in cheek to outright brazen. She was voted the Most Outstanding Single Parent by her one and only daughter and biggest fan. The accolades keep rolling in.

Candace Neilson

The brilliant lineup doesn’t end there. Candace Neilson is a mother, recovering addict, skilled performer, lover of Kaas, comedy, story-telling, and laughing at her own indiscretions. Candace shares her uncomfortable truths and permits us to laugh at our questionable life choices. She claims her own hilariously and triumphantly, with some of the bravest comedy on the Cape Town circuit.

Not only are there influential female comedians joining the lineup, but allies to women are also adding their voices to the lineup.

“We are also proud to feature the wonderful and hilarious JamJam, who has made educating men on the issues of gender-based violence his top priority.

Finally, making his comedic debut is Nicolas Henshilwood, a queer, first-year language student with a wit that is almost as dry as his Tinder profile.”

Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust

Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust is a non-profit that works to offer support and counselling to victims of rape and gender-based violence.

“We are the one social profit organisation in South Africa that provides rape survivors and their communities with support, access to justice and the means to make change happen. We do this because of our extraordinary expertise and that expertise comes from our commitment to learning from our clients and from the communities we serve.”

Funds raised from this performance will help the Rape Crisis to continue offering counselling and support to victims of sexual assault, training, and education, as well as continued advocacy and community mobilisation to educate and empower young women across South Africa.

You can find out more about the organisation via the Facebook page or Website.

The Event

The Comedy Fundraiser for Rape Crisis will be taking place on Friday, 13 May 2022, at the Galloway Theatre in Cape Town. Tickets cost R280 and include an F@*! GBV t-shirt designed by Compass Rose Collection and a welcome drink. You can also opt for a ‘show only’ ticket for R80. The performance starts at 8 pm. You can buy your ticket here.
