Senthan Naicker has secured a coveted spot as one of only four University of Pretoria students selected for this year’s prestigious MIT student exchange programme.

Pretoria, South Africa (14 January 2026)
– In a life-changing opportunity, the University of Pretoria (UP) has officially announced the four exceptional students headed to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) this year – and Senthan Naicker is one of the chosen few!

“We were selected from our results, but also after a few of our professors reviewed personal statements and interviewed us to get a sense of our personalities, ambitions and intentions were we to get into the programme,” an excited Senthan shares with GoodThingsGuy.

The aspiring change-maker just completed his second year and is studying towards a degree in Mechanical Engineering at UP.

“I chose this degree for several reasons but to sum it up, it’s because I want to change the world in a tangible, meaningful and immediate way. I love the idea of being able to design, create, test and reiterate something all myself.”

Senthan says he’s learned and grown a lot over the past two years at UP and has come to realise that the university offers some of the best engineering education in the world.

However, he’s eager to build on his knowledge by making the most of this new opportunity to learn more from a practical standpoint at MIT.

“We leave 24 January and will only be back in December. The programme is for the whole of our third year.

“From what I’ve been told, they receive more opportunities to apply the theory they learn by building whatever they may design. Even more so, I am excited at the opportunity to study subjects in other disciplines as we get to choose additional modules,” he says.

Senthan is curious about pursuing a career in aerospace and is looking forward to taking an extra physics course or two, and even one in music at the world-renowned private research university.

“But who knows what the world holds. I feel this will give me the chance to explore everything out there so I can find my true passions. And I can’t wait to find out!”

We wish Senthan the very best of luck as he embarks on this incredible journey and makes the most of every moment in Cambridge!
