Though breast cancer is common, it’s rarely expected to strike at 23. Shanay Thompson is courageously battling an aggressive Triple Negative Grade 3 Breast Cancer diagnosis, fighting with determination for the future she deserves.
Alberton, South Africa (02 December 2025) – Breast cancer is a prevalent diagnosis, often striking women over 40, but it doesn’t spare the young. At just 23, Shanay Thompson is facing one of the biggest and most unexpected health challenges of her young life.
Shanay was diagnosed with Triple Negative Grade 3 Breast Cancer and is battling fiercely for her health and her future. In addition to her impacted health, without medical aid, Shanay has experienced the financial burden.
Leading up to her recent surgery, she worked half days and received chemotherapy through government care.
“I am deeply grateful that I was able to get the help. After surgery, I will need radiation, but don’t know where I will have that done [yet] because of the wait in government.”
“I was informed that there might be a waiting list, but I have hope and faith that it won’t be too long, as others have received their treatment within two months.”
She’s received support from her loved ones and her local cancer support group, which has rallied behind her as she navigates an emotionally, physically and financially draining journey.
Shanay launched a BackaBuddy campaign six months ago, which has steadily received donations, which have helped cover chemotherapy and her lumpectomy that was scheduled for this past Sunday. However, she still requires radiation – a costly process, should she go private, that can take months.
Her hope is still to access the treatments needed through government care.
“Through this journey, I’ve learned to stay calm, to trust, and to remain grateful for every blessing, including each one of you,” Shanay said, further thanking everyone who has stood with her.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to every person who has donated, shared, or supported me in any way. You are part of my strength, and I carry your kindness with me always,” she shares.
