A South African man broke a Guinness World Record when he ate 420 grams of Marmite in one minute.
Pretoria, South Africa (15 November 2020) – Billy “Bilnasty” Cowley, of Pretoria, said he vowed to make his life more exciting after he survived a bout with melanoma skin cancer, and that quest led to his taking on the world record for eating Marmite!
Yup, in 2020 we are celebrating every single win… even the Marmite eating ones!
According to Official Guinness Records, the most Marmite eaten in one minute is 368 grams and was achieved by André Ortolf (Germany) in Augsburg, Germany, on 17 April 2018, but Bilnasty has beaten that record… by eating 420 grams of the food spread in just 60 seconds.
The record was officially beaten on Thursday, the 29th of October 2020, at Hennie’s Moreleta restaurant in Pretoria.
The South African vowed to make his life more exciting after surviving cancer 13 years ago which led him on a quest for the world record. He had spent months preparing for the record attempt by eating Marmite every day.
“It has always been my life-long dream to attempt one of the Guinness World Records. Growing up, my mother always used to buy me the Guinness books, and I was always fascinated by what people can do and admired them,” he said.
Bilnasty, who is a financial advisor by profession, said he took part in the competition to get people smiling again during this tough year and also to remind South Africans that anyone can compete in a world competition!
“Everyone has been going through tough times these past few months – I hope the World Record will be something that will get people to smile.”
